Are you using IE? Some browsers, certain versions of IE in particular, will messily terminate (TCP FIN) the SSL connection mid-handshake when the server asks them for a certificate, and will then prompt the user to select a certificate and restart the SSL handshake from scratch, remembering the selected certificate.
Try telling your browser to remember which certificate to use. If the error message on the server console goes away when the browser cert prompt goes away, that's probably what you are seeing.
